 Ought to know the 5 stages of Aging?

In each of these stages he/she finds himself in different situations and experiences different problems. Old age is unavoidable, undesirable and problem ridden phase of life. These problems usually appear after the age of 65 years.

These problems may be divided under 5 heads:

(i) Physiological

(ii) Psychological

(iii) Social

(iv)  Emotional

(v) Financial

1. Physiological Problems:

Old age is a period of physical decline where one does begin to slow down physically. Physiological problems include:

  •          Loss of teeth
  •          Wrinkles are formed and the veins show out prominently on the skin.
  •          Aged  people also prone to heart disease and chronic diseases
  •          Malfunctioning of the sense organs
  •          Eyes and ears are greatly affected

2. Psychological Problems:

Older people are susceptible to depressions. The two major disorders of older people are senile dementia and psychosis with cerebral arterio sclerosis. These two disorders account for approximately 80% of the disorders among older people

3. Emotional Problem:

They no longer have their own ability to judge but still they want to maintain their grip over the younger ones. Due to generation gap the youngsters do not pay attention to their words. Instead of showing a sympathetic attitude towards the old, they start showing their rights and power. 

4. Social Problems:

Older people suffer social losses greatly with age. The home becomes the center of their social life which gets confined to relationship with the family members. Severe chronic health problems enable them to become socially isolated which results in loneliness and depression.

5. Financial Problem:

Retirement from job usually results in loss of income they receive. With no income they are changed from the state of “Chief bread winner to a mere dependent” The treatment of their health creates more financial problem for old people It is a period of disappointment, rejection, disease, repentance and loneliness.
